A group of advisers from the teaching and community learning and development (CLD) professions used the My Skills My Future (MSMF) resource packs, developed by the SCQF Partnership, combined with growth mindset concepts, to mentor disengaged first year pupils on a one-to-one basis. Training centred on the use of the toolkit and how to deliver encouragement, recognition and praise using growth mindset language and attitudes. Advisers and young people enjoyed using MSMF, and attributed its use to improved relationships with the young people. Increases in confidence, career and skills awareness and ambition were other benefits of the mentoring.
One adviser said of the difference she saw in her client after using the MSMF pack: “When you actually look at the individual criteria he’s made a lot of progress. Every single one of them is positive. Some of them are quite dramatic in terms of possible careers. Previously I reckon he wasn’t interested in future progression at all and now we’ve got him as up to a 9; he’s got ambitions, he’s got things that he wants to do and he’s starting to believe a bit more in his ability to actually get there.”
We are running free workshops for those wishing to use the My Skills, My Future suite of resources to support individuals in identifying the skills they have gained from other experiences outwith formal qualifications. The aim of the workshop is to help advisers fully understand the resources and their benefits to individuals. It also offers the chance to try them out through a series of practical activities including benchmarking skills to the SCQF. Register for the next workshop taking place in Glasgow on 15th November.
We are also offering a free half day workshop for those who have attended a MSMF workshop previously who wish to revisit the My Skills, My Future resources. The aim of the workshop is to help advisers refresh their knowledge of the resources and their benefits to individuals. It also offers another chance to work through some of practical activities including benchmarking skills to the SCQF. Register for the MSMF Refresher workshop running in Glasgow on 23rd November.
