Meet Fiona Garry, Lead: Recognition of Prior Learning at the SCQF Partnership

Fiona Garry

What is your role within the SCQFP?

I work as the Lead for Recognition of Prior Learning within the Quality Team at SCQF Partnership. My role involves working with the SCQF Credit Rating Bodies, delivering workshops and a wide variety of work surrounding Recognition of Prior Learning, and in as many small projects as I can to help within my team and the wider organisation.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

I enjoy the variety of the work that the SCQF is involved in and being involved in the many opportunities that this role has afforded me. Delivering workshops is my favourite part and no matter how often I deliver a workshop it always pleases me to see how happy, and usually quite astonished, people are at what the SCQF does for the education landscape in Scotland.

Tell us a bit about your career to date

I started work aged 11 in the local market selling cagoules! After that I started training as a nurse but quickly realised it wasn’t for me. I then became the first ever Credit Controller at the University of the West of Scotland where I stayed for almost 28 years working in a variety of roles and gaining my degree on a part time basis. I moved to the SCQF Partnership 3 years ago to enjoy a more strategic oversight of the Education sector and have had my eyes opened at all the work that goes on within the college sector and beyond.

Tell us something interesting about yourself?

I went to Royal Ascot on my own and was seen on the telly that night as the camera panned the crowd!
