A new qualification is giving young people the skills to resolve conflict and build safer communities.

The Introduction to Restorative Approaches course, developed by YouthLink Scotland as part of the No Knives, Better Lives (NKBL) programme, is credit rated at SCQF Level 5 – the same level as a National 5. It provides learners aged 12 to 25 with practical strategies to handle disputes, strengthen relationships, and take accountability for their actions.
About the SCQF level 5 course
Through interactive sessions and a full training day, participants explore empathy, active listening and restorative questioning, while also keeping a personal conflict diary to reflect on their own experiences.
The course not only helps young people navigate challenges at school, at home, and in their communities, but also boosts their confidence, communication skills and personal growth.
Who’s it for?
The course is aimed at young people involved in youth work, peer support, leadership roles, or those looking to build confidence in how they handle conflict.
It’s especially beneficial for young people who want to improve their communication, relationships and personal growth. Youth workers and educators also recommend it for those involved in mentoring or community safety initiatives.
Learner stories
Learners have shared the impact in their own words:
I wanted to understand how to deal with conflict in a way that didn’t make things worse. This course helped me think before I act—and it’s helped me in school and at home. Participant, age 16
Doing this course gave me confidence to speak up and actually listen to what others are going through. I use what I learned in my youth club all the time now. Young leader, age 18
Course delivery
The course is delivered through a Train the Trainer model, equipping youth workers and practitioners with the resources to deliver the programme directly to young people. Each learner gains one credit at SCQF Level 5. This recognition makes a powerful addition to a CV or personal statement, helping colleges, employers, and universities understand the level of achievement. It also encourages a sense of pride and validation for participants who may not always thrive in traditional academic settings.
The cost is £25 per learner, with YouthLink Scotland members eligible for 10 free learner places per year.
