Quality assurance

Quality assurance ensures that qualifications placed on the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) meet rigorous standards for consistency, credibility and learner progression.

The SCQF Handbook sets out the high level principles all credit rating bodies are asked to adhere to, and has a dedicated chapter on Quality Assurance. The handbook also provides extensive guidance on the credit rating process. Learn more below.

Quality assurance – SCQFP-approved credit rating bodies

SCQFP-approved credit rating bodies (CRBs) are subject to monitoring by the SCQFP, which falls into two categories:

  • Annual monitoring – carried out once a year through a self-evaluation submission and correspondence with SCQFP officers, with a formal online meeting if required
  • Periodic review – carried out every four years through a self-evaluation submission and a formal online meeting with a review team, including external reviewers

To request templates for either of the above, please email info@scqf.org.uk

More details are available in our Quality Assurance Model.

An annual fee of £1,500 (2023) each year is applicable irrespective of the type of review being undertaken.

Quality assurance – tertiary institutions

For tertiary institutions (colleges and universities) that have credit rated provision, quality assurance is the responsibility of the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) and will operate via the Tertiary Quality Enhancement Review (TQER). SCQFP officers will review specific documentation submitted as part of the TQER evidence and will provide the QAA review team with a desk-based analysis of the documentation based on the requirements of the SCQF principles and best practice.
