When recruiting staff, how you specify the level of skill or competence that you need applicants to have is important. Depending on how you communicate this, you can decrease or increase the pool of potential talent from which to select.

The SCQF has 12 levels and covers academic and vocational qualifications delivered at school, college, university and the workplace. This includes apprenticeships and industry-specific qualifications in fields as varied as food hygiene, counselling and careers advice as well as chartered profession awards such as in banking.

For example: An Ordinary degree is at SCQF level 9 but so is a Professional Development Award, Scottish Vocational Qualification, Graduate Diploma and Certificate and the Technical and Graduate Apprenticeships.

By using the SCQF levels in your recruitment processes, including your job description and advert, you and your potential employees can better understand the skills you need.
